Are English Batsmen Lions Of Their Own Backyard Only ?

In 2011, England defeated India 4-0 in the test series and snatched the ICC number one ranking in Test matches from India. In the same year, they had defeated Aussies in Australia to win the Ashes series. Many cricket analysts claimed that the English team is going to rule over the World cricket in the Test format of cricket match. And to some extent, they were right in saying so. They were having a very experienced batting order including the likes of Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott, Eoin Morgan etc. Their bowling attack is still

one of the best bowling attacks in the cricketing world which include James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Tim Bresnan, Steven Finn and Graeme Swann.

When India went to England after winning the World Cup, everybody told that it would be the final hurdle for England to reach at the number one spot in the Test matches. At that time, India was number one in ICC Test ranking and England was at the second spot. In the first session of first Test match, the most experienced Indian Fast bowler Zaheer Khan got injured. After that Indian bowling attack became very weak and English batsmen took advantage of it. They went on to pile tens and thousands of runs in the every match of that test series. Except Praveen Kumar, not a single Indian bowler looked to take the English wickets. England took the home advantage to prepare green turf for teasing Indian Batsmen with the bouncing deliveries. Indian batsmen looked helpless at those pitches. Many got injured and returned to Indian and some continued playing with the injuries. Their fast bowlers got more than 60 wickets in aggregate in that test series.

But every morning has its

evening. When England went to Abu Dhabi to play against Pakistan, they lost to them 0-3 in the Test series. Saeed Ajmal teased their batsmen badly with his doosra. Questions again were raised, are English batsmen incapable in playing spin ? When South Africa toured England this year, England lost its number one Test ranking to them. South African pace bowlers bowled very well in this series.

After losing Test series against South Africa, England has come to India to play the four matches Test Series. As expected, they are going to play all the four matches of this series on a spinning track. In the first test match of this series, except Cook and Prior, every English batsman was troubled by the Indian spinners. India also enforced follow-on to England in this Test match. India won this match by 9 wickets. Indian spinners took 13 wickets in this match. Pragyan Ojha alone took 9 wickets. This loss of England has once again proved that they do not play spin well. Some analysts are also saying that English team is the lion of their own backyard only.

England has not won a single test series in India in the last 28 years. India is looking to take the revenge of their 0-4 defeat in the test series back in England, last year. England has a history of not playing well on the sub-continent pitches. That’s why I am asking you, are English Batsmen lions of their own backyard only ?
