Mumbai is a land of glorious opportunities. It has provided jobs to people from all parts of India. It is probably the one of the best regions across the world when it comes to offering employment options. The issue I had with Mumbai is the pace of infrastructure development across the region. Many promises have been made to make the city comparable to international standards however none of them have really been successful. We haven’t seen any major steps to boost the growth of the city. Private players have been moving out of Mumbai due to the high cost ofland and the overall situation of transport.
I remember sometime in1995 an international airport was planned in Navi Mumbai. I recollect it quite distinctly because my college was located in Navi Mumbai. People had started anticipating that the realty rates in Navi Mumbai would touch sky high levels. However, I have never seen such promises come true. Yes, the Palm Beach Road provided a great business avenue and connected Navi Mumbai with Mumbai but the pace atwhich it was able to achieve this has not been really enticing. From 1995, nearly 17 years have passed by and it was only quite recently that the infrastructure developed around this area. The Planned international airport still remains a plan on the paper. I mean 17 years is a lifetime. It is probably the difference between 2 generations. However, the way it is moving ahead I still feel that it is going to remain a distant dream.
Today when I see realty advertisements around Navi Mumbai still marketing about the planned airport, I can do nothing but just laugh about it. I don’t know when things will materialize but the way infrastructure has developed in Navi Mumbai it seems just wishful thinking to assume something.
I just hope that someone takes the required steps to improve the infrastructure in and around the city.
